However, the road to becoming a driving instructor requires lots of dedication, especially when it comes to passing the ADI theory test, which is a compulsory requirement.

What is the driving instructor theory test?
First and foremost, what is the driving instructor theory test?
The main purpose of the driving instructor theory test is to examine a driving instructor’s knowledge of the Rules of the Road, as well as general road safety and driving instruction matters. After all, it’s paramount that all budding driving instructors possess this level of skill and expertise.
The test is incredibly similar to the driving theory test in the sense that it follows a similar format and must be completed within 90 minutes.
The driving instructor theory test is made up of two parts - the multiple-choice test and Hazard Perception Test. In order to progress on your journey as a qualified driving instructor, you will need to pass both parts. A voice over option is also available.
How many questions is the driving instructor theory test?
There are 100 questions in the driving instructor theory test which you will need to answer. In order to pass the test, you will be required to get 85 correct to pass, with at least 20 correct in each band. With this in mind, prior to completing your driving instructor theory test, it is paramount that you give yourself plenty of time to revise. There’s lots of resources out there that will help you to revise.
When you’re preparing for the ADI theory test, you should also keep in mind that you will only have 90 minutes to complete the test.
What are the ADI test topics?
The ADI test part 1 will require you to answer multiple-choice questions from the following topics.
· Road procedure
· Disabilities, the law, and driving test
· Publications and instructional techniques
· Car control, Pedestrians, mechanical knowledge and Road signs and signals,
You will only have one correct answer option. There’s also a hazard perception test which has a minimum pass mark of 57 out of 75. You must pass both parts to qualify.
Is the driving theory test the same questions?
Although the topics covered remain the same in every theory test, different questions covering the same topic are sometimes used. The vast majority of questions are also worded slightly differently in each test, with different answer options. With this in mind, it’s important that you have a sound understanding of every topic.
What happens if you fail the driving instructor theory test?
If you fail your driving instructor theory test, don’t worry! There will be an opportunity for you to take the test again. However, you must book the next attempt within 2 years of passing your ADI part 1 test. And remember, if you chose the extra training option when you applied for your trainee licence, it is important that you keep in mind that you must complete 5 hours of extra training before you retake the test.
How many times can you fail your driving instructor test?
You can take the test again if you fail it at your first or second attempt. However, it’s important to keep in mind that if you fail the test a third time, you'll have to retake and pass the theory test before you can retake the driving ability test again.
How much is a theory test for a driving instructor?
To take your ADI test, it is £81 for an ADI part 1 test and £66 for a DVSA enhanced rider scheme trainer theory test.
